History of
video editing
Early film
makers and pioneers included the Lumiere brothers who developed some of the
first editing techniques in the late 1800’s.
In 1895 the
Lumiere brothers invited cinematography. Cinematography was a three in one
device that recorded, captured and projected motion picture.
Lumiere
brothers were French inventors and pioneer manufactures of photographic
equipment who devised the early motion-picture camera and projector called the
cinmatorgraphe.
Edwin S.
Porter- came along and showed the two brothers that film didn’t have to be one
long still in 1901. He used footage to tell a different story unrelated to what
the footage originally was meant to portray.
D. W. Griffiths- He acknowledged the father of video editing in its modern sense. His influence on the Hollywood mainstream and Russian revaloutionary film was immediate. His contributions cover the full range of dramatic construction: the variation of of shots that have impact.
Techniques:
The techniques that video editiors use reveal alot about how people create a meaning. There are a number of different camera shots in the film making industry for example here are a few below;
. long shot
. dissolve
. fade in/out
. black out
The 180° rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should stay in the same left/right relationship to one another . When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.
If you break the 180 degree rule then the audience can get confused, they may lose focus, become disorientated and even miss vital parts of the film.
In 1832 Joseph Plateau and sons introduced the Phenakistoscope. The Phenakistoscope was a successful illusion toy. Pictures on one disc viewed through slots in the other, appeared to move when the two were spun and viewed in a mirror.
In 1888 Thomas A. Edison, inventor of the electric light bulb and the phonograph designed machines for making and showing moving pictures. With his assistant W.K.L Dickson, Edison began experimenting with adapting the phonograph and tried to make rows of tiny photographs on similar cylinders.
In 1895 the first film shot with the Cinématographe camera is Workers leaving the Lumière factory at Lyon. Shot in March it is shown in public.
In 1895 one of the most famous film screenings in history took place on December 28th, 1895. Customers paid one Franc for a twenty-five minute programme of ten Lumière films. These included Feeding the Baby, The Waterer Watered and A View of the Sea.
In 1900 British filmmaker James Williamson produces "The Big Swallow" which demonstrated the ingenuity of the Brighton School of filmmakers.
